Kandahar Shifts from Poppy to Saffron

News of a successful saffron cultivation in Kandahar has raised hopes that saffron will substitute poppy
Some of the farmers in Daman district of Kandahar have for the first time successfully grown saffron.
The district farmers consider saffron as a good alternative to poppy cultivation in the province and say it has grown very well.
Meanwhile, Chief of Daman district said a number of farmers from Kandahar will soon be sent to Herat and Nangarhar to learn how to grow saffron.
"Because it is possible to earn a lot with little work, the people have turned to saffron cultivation," Chief of Daman district, Mr Saraj, told TOLOnews.
Local farmers are satisfied and urge the government to facilitate marketing for them at the national and international levels.
Besides growing saffron, farmers in Kandahar are also reported to have started growing cotton and mint.
An acre of land in Kandahar is said to produce up to three kilos of saffron, each kilo being sold at 3500 dollars in local markets.
